Answers:

KCAL simply means kilocalorie. The prefix "kilo" means 1000. Therefore, a KCAL or kilocalorie is simply 1000 calories.

To convert with this, simply multiply the number of kilocalories (KCAL) by 1000 to equal the amount of calories.

In Human nutrition (what is on food packaging) Calorie (with a capital C) is the same thing as a kilocalarie and = 1000 calories (with lower case c). kcal (no caps) is the correct denotation and abbreviation for kilocalorie. As a point of reference the calorie is defined as the amount of heat required to raise 1 gram of water from 14.5 to 15.5 degrees Celcius so a kcal is also referred to as a kilogram calorie (kg cal), being the amount of heat required to raise a kilogram of water 1 degree Celcius. Although calorie is therefore a metric unit, the accepted SI unit for all energy (including heat) is the joule. One calorie = 4.184 joules = 4.184 J. one kcal = 4.184 kJ. It is funny that k ifs the prefix for kilo as all other prefixes for greater than 1 unit are caps and lower case letters are in all other cases reserved for fractions of 1.
