Sounds like some kind of counterfeit -- better get it authenticated.

Does it have the watermark picture visible when you backlight it? Does it have the vertical security thread?

Note - a $1 bill will not have either of the above security features. A $10 bill in either of the 2 current series (large portrait, green/white or orange/red/green) will have both a watermark of Sec. Hamilton and a vertical security thread showing the denomination in tiny letters.
