Figuring out how to dress to go to a Broadway show can be confusing. There are always people in audience dressed in good jeans with a nice top or business casual. Matinee audiences tend to be more casual then evening audience. It also depends on where you are sitting. The higher the seats, the more casually the patrons dress (in my opinion). You can always dress up, but formal wear (long dress or tux) is not appropriate anymore. Jacket and tie for men is ok or a suit in the evening. I would say business casual is always acceptable at the theater. I tend to wear comfortable pants because I wind up tearing my nylons on the seat in front of me.

One key NYC point. People in New York wear black, grey, white and sometimes pink. Don't ask me why, but they do. People dressed in colors tend to be tourists. If nothing else, take a look around you and notice it. My mom always thinks it's funny to realize that no one is wearing color except in Time Square.
